![]() When threatened, bearded dragons will puff up their bodies and beards to ward off predators and make their somewhat dull spikes seem somewhat more dangerous. Bearded dragons are characterized by their broad, triangular heads, flattened bodies, and rows and clusters of spiny scales covering their entire bodies. The genus Pogona is in the subfamily Amphibolurinae of the lizard family Agamidae. Their diet consists primarily of insects, vegetation, and occasionally small rodents. Pogona species bask on rocks and exposed branches in the mornings and afternoons. They are a semi-arboreal species, spending significant amounts of time on branches, in bushes, and near human habitation. The name "bearded dragon" refers to the underside of the throat (or "beard") of the lizard, which can turn black and gain weight for a number of reasons, most often as a result of stress, or if they feel threatened. Pogona is a genus of reptiles containing six lizard species which are often known by the common name bearded dragons. ADV+ dragons that make it past the year mark will typically be thinner and prone to other health issues. While most beardeds will decline within a year, others can live 4+ years. ADV affects each bearded dragon differently. This animal should stay completely separate from all other pets, as ADV is contagious and can infect other bearded dragons. If you suspect your bearded dragon has ADV, see a veterinarian immediately to get an ADV test done. Young bearded dragons with ADV are usually stunted and most die within a year from malnutrition and neurological decline. In young bearded dragons, signs include emaciation, regurgitation, and a host of neurological symptoms such as star gazing, rolling, twisting, and inability to walk correctly. Atadenovirus is most commonly seen in young bearded dragons, though it can infect older beardeds. Wild Insects – In the words of mothers all over the world, “You don’t know where that’s been!” Wild insects are often infested with parasites that can infect your bearded dragon.Kale is high in goitrogens, which can negatively impact a bearded dragon’s thyroid. Kale – Kale can be fed in moderation, but too many keepers still use it as a staple green.Spinach – Spinach is very high in oxalates, which bind to calcium and prevent the body from fully absorbing it.Romaine and Iceburg – These greens aren’t dangerous, just very low in nutrition.Pinkie Mice – Feeding pinkies to bearded dragons is a controversial topic because they are very high in fat. ![]() Giving an adult bearded the occassional mealworm shouldn’t do any harm, but we choose to avoid them. Mealworms – Mealworms have an exoskeleton that is hard for bearded dragons to digest, which can cause GI upset and even impaction – this is especially dangerous for young bearded dragons.
